Hsinchu is also called "Zhu Chian" which comes from Taokas, the language of the aboriginals who were the earliest people living in the Hsinchu plain. Three hundred years ago, one Chinese - Wang Shi Jie came to Zhu Chian in order to find fertile lands for cultivation, and he was the first person from South Min (Min - one of the provinces in Southern China) who came to Hsinchu City.
In 1733, the main material used to build the surrounding city walls of Hsinchu was bamboo. In 1806, Hsinchu had the first soil walls and in 1829, people dug a moat and used bricks and stones to rebuild the city. The east gate, the only gate that has been well preserved, and the moat we see today were the historical remains from that period.
In 1980, the Hsinchu Science Park was established which enables Hsinchu to become one of the headquarters of Taiwan's high-tech industry and creates economic miracles as well as promotes a large amount of trading opportunities. |
