 By 2004, based on the categories of different occupations, about 54.72% of the total working force was in the service industry, about 43.61% was in the heavy & light industries (mainly in manufacturing industry) and about 1.67% was in the agricultural industry. If compared to the previous years, the number of working force in the heavy & light industry or service industry is increasing, whereas the population of farmers is decreasing. It indicates that Hsinchu city is turning to a more industrial and high-tech city.
 About 33.88%, which occupies the most proportion, of the entire working force, was in the manufacturing-related companies. The second largest part of the working force, about 18.88%, includes technicians, the professionals and the salers. The third largest part, about 16.93%, includes customer serving people.
